About us

From the mountains of Peru to the California coast.

Sierra Safe Solutions is here to ensure your food safety program is built to navigate ever-evolving regulatory requirements, and to protect you and your customers.

The practice began as independent consulting in 2024 and launched officially as Sierra Safe Solutions in 2026. Our team leverages more than fifteen years of experience managing food safety programs for farms, packinghouses, food processing facilities and dietary supplement producers.

Today, Sierra Safe Solutions partners with growers, processors, manufacturers, packinghouses, distributors and dietary supplement companies to simplify compliance through consulting, training, audit preparation, food safety program development, traceability and digital compliance solutions.

We are here to help our clients reach their goals — whether that is a first-time certification, managing daily records, or guidance on a regulation that has just changed.

Testimonials

Sierra Safe Solutions guided Anacapa Avocados through our first PrimusGFS certification. Rocio built our food safety program from the ground up, trained our team, and made an overwhelming process feel clear and manageable. We scored 98% on our first complete audit across Modules 1, 5, and 6, and closed out our corrective actions to finish at 100%. She also led our GS1 implementation and with Sierra Safe software we now have access to an enterprise-level food safety management system that allows us to track the lifecycle of the product from farm to our retail customer — meeting our retail buyers’ labeling requirements and laying the foundation for full traceability next year. We HIGHLY recommend Sierra Safe Solutions to any grower or packer.

Founded by Rocio Carrion, M.S. Food Science, Sierra Safe Solutions was inspired by her journey from the highlands of Cajamarca, Peru, where she earned her degree in Food Engineering, to the United States, where she was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to pursue a Master of Science in Food Science at Washington State University.

The name Sierra comes from the Spanish word for highlands or mountain range, honoring the region where Rocio was born and raised. It reflects the values that shaped her journey—strength, resilience, integrity, and perseverance—and serves as a reminder of the foundation upon which the company was built.

Her career began in the classroom, training artisanal cheesemakers in GMP, sanitation and HACCP in the Cajamarca highlands, and she has been teaching ever since. With more than fifteen years of experience in the food industry, Rocio has since served as a Food Safety and Quality Supervisor, Manager, Consultant, and PrimusGFS Contract Auditor.

At Villa Andina in Peru she secured HACCP certification within six months and led the company through BRC certification for the first time in its history — the first of several first-time certifications she has guided.

Having worked on both sides of the audit process, she understands not only what auditors look for but also the operational challenges companies face in maintaining effective food safety systems. This unique perspective allows Sierra Safe Solutions to develop practical, sustainable solutions that go beyond passing audits—they help businesses build lasting food safety cultures.

Where the name comes from

Sierra is the Spanish word for highlands. This is the range Rocio was born and raised in, and the one the company is named for.

Our team

The people behind the program.

Juliana Lopez, Food Safety Specialist at Sierra Safe Solutions

Juliana Lopez

Food Safety Specialist
  • M.Sc. Environment & Safety
  • Food Engineer
  • 15+ years in quality & laboratory assurance
  • ISO/IEC 17025 & ISO 9001 accreditation
  • Former university lecturer

Juliana brings a laboratory perspective to every program — the discipline of people who have to defend a result, not just record one.

She spent more than eight years at Nestlé as a Quality Assurance Analyst in dairy, running physicochemical and microbiological analysis, inspecting collection centres, and applying Lean methods to continuous improvement. Before that she spent over five years at SGS, first as a laboratory analyst in water and food testing, then as Quality Assurance Coordinator managing the ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 9001 accreditation systems.

A Food Engineer with a Master’s in Environment and Safety, and a former university lecturer, Juliana works alongside Rocio on documentation review, program maintenance between site visits, and the record-keeping that decides whether an audit goes smoothly. Her accreditation background is what allows Sierra Safe Solutions to advise on laboratory selection, method suitability and environmental monitoring rather than referring that work elsewhere.
